MARQUETTE LACROSSE CLUB GOES 1-1 ON SEASON OPENING ROAD-TRIP
Milwaukee, Sunday, February 19 – Marquette’s Men’s Lacrosse Club traveled to Vadnais Heights, Minnesota this past weekend to compete against Minnesota State-Mankato and University of Minnesota-Duluth. The young team was looking to start off the season on the right foot with first-year coach Tom Antonneau.
The first contest, against a Mankato team that plays Marquette very closely every year, kept the tradition alive in the 2012 season opener. With a six-goal effort by freshman attacker Jake Kennedy and an eighteen save performance by freshman goalkeeper Joe Martin, the Golden Eagles were able to overcome a four goal deficit to defeat the Mavericks by a final score of 13-12. This marked the first win for Marquette and the first victory for head coach Tom Antonneau.
Less than twenty-four hours stood between the conclusion of the Mankato and Duluth games. The number sixteen ranked Bulldogs were coming off their fifth UMLL conference championship within the last five years and looked to build on that legacy. Duluth quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the end of the first half and never looked back taking the contest 17-3 at the final. Freshman goalie Joe Martin played another incredible game, despite the one-sided outcome, recording twenty-five saves, which ranks him with the fifth highest save percentage in the nation after two games.
The Marquette University Men’s Lacrosse Club has been giving students from all across the United States an opportunity to compete at a high level of competition since 1984. Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the club has been growing the sport of Lacrosse all throughout the state for almost twenty years.
